On They Skate to Round Two

By Madison Jones

Eight teams survived round one of the playoffs and ended the dreams of their eight opponents. For those eight that are out, they get the rest of the summer off to think about what happened, how to fix it, and what they need to do in order to win it all next year. Those that are still alive have to prepare for their next round opponents. Let’s take a look at how it all looks at this point.

Both of the number one seeds had a relatively easy time in the first round. Buffalo made short work of the New York Islanders by taking the series four games to one, while Detroit snuffed out the Calgary Flames, four games to two. The number two seeds advanced just as easily. New Jersey took down Tampa Bay four games to two, and Anaheim knocked out Minnesota four games to one. Now it gets a bit interesting as both of the number three seeds had tough times. The New York Rangers, a six seed, swept Atlanta. That’s right; the only sweep of the first round was from a six seed upsetting a three seed. The other number three seed did survive, as Vancouver managed to knock out Dallas in game seven. The four seeds split it up, as Ottawa wiped out Pittsburgh and San Jose upset Nashville.

Here are the round two matchups for the eight survivors:

Buffalo(1) vs. NY Rangers(6)
Detroit(1) vs. San Jose(5)
New Jersey(2) vs. Ottawa(4)
Anaheim(2) vs. Vancouver(3)

Will the top seeds continue to advance, or will those who pulled off upsets ride that momentum to another series win and make their way to the next round? No matter how it goes, these games should be very interesting. The second round starts Wednesday, so be sure to check in and see how it’s going!
