Sleeper Watch

By Arlo Vander

Since unexpectedly being left off the Canadian Olympic team, Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby has been on a tear, scoring nine points in four games. The Calder Trophy front-runner’s hot streak has naturally drawn much attention in the media, usually accompanied by snide comments directed at the Olympic Committee that felt he wouldn’t help the team heading to the Turin Games. Yet amidst all the raised eyebrows of those who would have loved to see Sid the Kid wearing the red maple leaf, don’t overlook Crosby’s new linemate, who not only happens to be racking up a goodly number of points himself, but also might still be available in your fantasy league.

Tomas Surovy’s season started on a low note when he found himself at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL. Called up on December 12, the 24-year-old soon found himself on a line with Crosby and Zigmund Palffy, which is when things began to get interesting. Since Penguins coach Michel Therrien made that line change, Surovy has been on fire, to the tune of six goals and two assists in six games played. In his last two games alone, the winger took ten shots on goal, hitting paydirt four times.

If Surovy’s success has gone unnoticed in your league, grab him off the wire immediately. As long as he continues to play alongside Crosby and Palffy, Surovy will continue to see plenty of opprtunities to score points – both for the Penguins and for your fantasy squad.

(And just in case you were wondering: Surovy won’t be heading to Turin in February, either. )
